At the peak of the guiding season, had to test the fish activity zones at Slovenian Jurassic Lake before hitting it with the client the day after. A plan was formed as soon as the client expressed his will to try the wild fish lake – calling a friend and we were already eager to get into the next adventure the day after. Behind the fly tying bench to the midnight and then sleeping it over to be ready for a new big day. At 8:30 am the belly boats were made ready and we jumped into relatively low water soon after. Starting with the newly tied bunny strip streamer and the action started right away – the second cast, the fish was hittin’ the streamer and statistics was made till the 10thcast – 5 hits and 4 fish out of the water… In all honest, most trout were smaller then am used too. The move to the other position and hitting the big old lady on the same streamer, which made the streamer disintegrated… Nothing wild, as I’ve spotted the midge eating trout cruising the flats and that is an impulse too much to stray away from the midge fishing. Long leader and a floating line – no indicator used though. For the one in the known, it was pretty easy… Cast, slow sinking of small midge and when the change in sinking rate was indicated – set made and … Bbaaaang, fish into backing. Lost my count after 15 fish. Most of them big – over sixty or 24 inches. Only when the wind picked up too much and the ripples were forcing me to use a sighter, have used the loon paste too form a small yellow blob, which helped me further. The water was falling even more, which made it even easier for us to spot the larger specimen. There was no need to change the tactics, just the weight and size of the midge. After 4 pm we decided to call it a quit, as there was no use to go into more and more trout. The only trouble we had, was getting out of the belly boat, as the water level has fallen for almost a meter… As you may have predicted the next day, the fishing for the client was wild! Numbers of trout, few a bit bigger, but with an average above 20 inches. A blast!
